Why They Settle Indoors
Brown recluse spiders are common throughout southwest Missouri and can remain inside buildings year-round.
Brown recluse spiders prefer dry, quiet spaces that are rarely disturbed. Closets, basements, attics, crawlspaces, garages, storage rooms and wall voids can all give them a place to live without being noticed.
They usually remain out of sight during the day and move around at night looking for insects. A spider may appear in a bathroom, bedroom or open area even though it is living somewhere else in the building.
Their presence does not mean a property is dirty or poorly maintained. Quiet spaces and other insects can give them what they need to remain indoors.

Scientific name: Loxosceles reclusa

Most Active
They can remain indoors year-round but are most active at night and during warmer months. Their movement usually slows during winter.
Egg Sacs
Females place small silk egg sacs in sheltered areas during warmer months. Each sac typically contains around 40 to 50 eggs, which hatch in about a month.
What They Eat
Brown recluse spiders feed on live and dead insects, including crickets, silverfish and cockroaches. They can also survive for several months when food is scarce.
Where They Hide
They settle behind stored items, inside boxes, beneath furniture and within cracks, wall voids and other spaces that are rarely disturbed.
How They Get Inside
They can enter through gaps around doors, foundations, vents and utility openings. They may also be carried inside with boxes, furniture, firewood and stored belongings.
Their Webs
Brown recluse webs are small, loose and irregular rather than neatly shaped. They build them in protected areas for shelter and egg sacs, not for catching food.

Signs Of Activity
Brown recluse spiders spend much of their time out of sight. These clues can help show whether they have settled in.
A Pattern Of Sightings
One spider may have been carried inside with a box or other stored item. Finding several within a few weeks, whether in the same room or different areas, is more likely to indicate an established problem.
Shed Skins And Egg Sacs
Thin, hollow spider-shaped skins or small silk sacs in protected areas can point to more than an occasional spider.
Spiders In Stored Items
Finding spiders in boxes, seasonal decorations, shoes or clothing suggests they are using storage areas for shelter.

Follow-Up May Be Needed
Established brown recluse problems may require more than one visit. Spiders and egg sacs can remain in protected areas, and sightings may continue for a period after the first service. Follow-up visits allow GorillaGuard to check the progress and address any remaining activity.
The number of visits depends on the property and the extent of the problem. GorillaGuard recommends additional service when it is needed, not automatically.
